Geospatial Data Portal for Soil Data

The Geospatial Data Portal for Soil Data aims to provide the Kerala Public Works Department (PWD) with a centralized, interactive platform to store, visualize, and share soil investigation data across the state. This portal has integrated spatially referenced bore logs and laboratory test data into a unified geodatabase, ensuring data authenticity, accessibility, and consistency. Through an intuitive web-based GIS interface, engineers, researchers, and decision-makers can easily explore soil profiles, analyse geotechnical parameters, and overlay them with infrastructure and environmental datasets. The system will support data-driven planning and decision making based on accurate subsurface information.
The establishment of this Geospatial Data Portal is of immense importance as it addresses the long-standing challenge of fragmented and inaccessible soil data within the Kerala PWD. Currently, vital geotechnical information from various projects often remains isolated in paper reports or disparate digital formats, making it difficult to reuse as a reference for future design and research. By consolidating this data into a spatially enabled digital repository, the portal ensures that past investigations become valuable reference assets for upcoming infrastructure works. Moreover, by visualizing soil characteristics across Kerala, the portal can support regional geotechnical mapping, hazard assessment, and climate-resilient infrastructure planning, making it a critical step toward sustainable and data-driven governance in the public works sector.
